So I just found out that this really popular #1 bestselling book, Fifty Shades of Grey, is really a Twilight fanfiction with the names and title changed. I’m not a Twifan so that taints it for me, but wouldn’t it be cool to see a popular Spashley fanfic published? There are definitely some out there that are good (and long) enough.

Just thought I’d put that out there.

    K bye.

I have less than zero interest in anything Twilight, but on the generic subject of fanfic-as-novel, I think the point of fanfic is to fill a gap that screenwriters have caused, not book authors.

Generally speaking, books fully explore relationships. It’s (predominantly American) TV shows which don’t. To use a non-Spashley example, if Glee were a series of books, the chances are that the relationship between Brittany and Santana would be as fully realised as that of Finn and Rachel. It’s BECAUSE television restricts what is shown of same-sex relationships that creates a gap for fanfiction to fill.

I buy maybe 50 books a year (and I download probably as many from places like ManyBooks, FeedBooks and the Kobo free marketplace), but I don’t have even a passing interest in lesbian fiction as something for which I would pay money because I’m really not interested in it outside of fanfiction.

Well, it isn’t surprising that fanfic based on Twilight has been published. Those books left a serious gap. And, at times, made me want to stab my eyes out.

I’m definitely biased, but I think you’ve both written fanfic that is capable of standing on its own. A good story is a good story. Whether it originated as fanfic or not.

  15. Clom

I tried out a few lesb-fic novels recently. I’ve gone back to just re-reading Dev, the quality out there is lousy, but mostly because you can sell self-published works through amazon.

  16. devje
    Posted 2 May 2012 at 1.17pm | Permalink

Yeah, but the Twilight novels and — one assumes, because I can’t watch them — films left a gap because they were written by someone with a moral imperative that was different from that of her readers, most of whom are not ultra-conservative Christians who think that all teen sex is a mortal sin which should be punishable by death.

I’ve tried reading free lesb-fic (loving that as a shorthand) online from some old-school writers who’re actually very, very good — technically and stylistically — but I’m still not interested in non-fanfic, no matter how well written.

As for a lot of the self-published stuff on the Kindle or Smashwords (for those of us ePUB types), it’s just like fanfic: some people can write, and some people have a lot more enthusiasm than talent and shouldn’t inflict that enthusiasm on the rest of us.

    *humble but valuable

  17. tee452

Even with Stikki, you can’t watch the movies, Dev? ;)

I know what you both mean about trying to read lesbian fiction and not being able to maintain interest. To me, it’s all soooooo trite.

That’s why I hang around here. Y’all find ways to keep it fresh.

    I discovered Radclyffe… so I’m a little less disturbed by Lesb-fic.

I, however, will not write fan fic forever so be warned. I will write till I die, but it won’t always be FF.

So if i’m not your FFJeebus… will I just be your FJeebus (tee hee)

no curls here but the swede did make a very lesbian comment today, for her anyhow, that my hair was looking more Sadie the Artful Dodgeress than Cat at the moment. A not too subtle hint to get a cut, then. Personally, Sadie is probably my fave on that show.

And speaking of Lip Service, I swear to God that if “sexy” Sam the Cop lands up in AE top 100 I am on the next plane to the AE offices to chuck a brick * thru the window*

    1. Eurovision is compulsory. Jedward are very good at what they do, but c’mon the Hump!

    2. The mobile version of the site seems to automatically tick the box for follow by email, so if you ever visited this page on your HTC (or autre Android / Apple handset), that’ll be your problem.

    3. I’m sure Heather Peace is a lovely person herself, but the character of Sam has zero attractive qualities and 99% of people are voting for Sam, not HP. I cannot fathom it at all. Do Americans find the Northern accent somehow attractive?

PS I’d never seen Jedward with Beiber hair before. It suits them.

    Happy Birthday Mini * hugs*

Dev, I am sure she is a fine person and good on her being out and all. The swede did mention she was on BBC Breakfast the other day about her tour thingie and she seemed nice but she couldn’t TIVO it for me as the baby was ” greeting for a feed”

It is Sam that I hate, stereotyically written and it is one scene that drove me to not liking the character.

I love Sadie. The missus loves Tess and Cat…..when not freaking.

And on Eurovison the Hump is humped. The Russian grannies are getting my vote and bet.

  31. yeahbutno

PS Dev I just about manage to make a call and text on my phone nevermind go on a website * laughs * the swede is still trying to show me how to do the touchcreen!!!! I was amazed that “The MarketPlace” was how I get those apps things!

so I think something is broken, somewhere!

  32. dev0347

I also saw HP on the sofa with Bill & Caroline (or poss Charlie & Louise). I agree with your wife that she seemed v nice and down-to-earth. She also had *much* better hair than the Sam-mullet. But Sam the character is loathsome. I stopped watching Lip Service anyway. I realised that I don’t like ANY of them except Cat.

I appreciate that the Hump is hampered by going first, but I actually think it’s the best-written song in the contest. Not that it’ll matter. The Russian grannies were terrible on the semi-final. You could hardly make out a word of their atonal mumbling. Not that it’ll matter, either.

PS I looked into the settings and I don’t know what’s going on with the replies. Temporary glitch? You should be able to unsubscribe from the emails they send you.

PPS You do know that they changed the name from Android Marketplace to Google Play months ago?

I don’t get the Sam thing either. I think she’s way too wooden and I find nothing redeeming about her. I much prefer Tess to any of the other characters and I think Ruta is unbelievably hot. However, I get why Dev likes Cat. I stopped watching when she got killed. I think it traumatized me a little because I had no idea Laura Fraser was leaving. From that point on, I just kept up via YT clips.

As far as accents go, I like Cat’s and Ed’s. I don’t know what part of the country they are from.

I liked Ukraine and Estonia on Eurovision. And everyone knows you watched it all, ybn! I did say the same thing about Montenegro. It was like Lurch saying a bunch of rhyming words. A lot of the performances were just nuts. For me, Tatu will be hard to beat as my all time fave.

  35. yeahbutno
    Posted 30 May 2012 at 2.22pm | Permalink

Not usually my type but I think Ruta is hot too.

Cat is Glasgow accent but a softish one. No idea at Ed, it is kinda Glasgow and kinda not, Dev will know better than me!!! And I have to say Cat being flattened was a WTF? moment in our house. I kinda thought she was going to leave as I knew she was involved in the Homeland pilot.but still! Defo got less interesting when she left.

My missus is still all cock-a-hoop at Eurovision, defo best song by far. We still entertain ourselves by doing her wee dance around the house too!

Ohhh! People! How come I missed this conversation?!
Didn’t watch Eurovision, so no idea what went down.

BUT I do agree with dev on the Sam issue, such a boring character.
Also agreeing with YBN on the Cat thing.

And speaking of Glasgow accent, I need resources to learn to deal with that, anyone can offer any help?!

  37. yeahbutno
    Posted 1 June 2012 at 5.33pm | Permalink

Sweden won it, Nutter but it was the bestest song by far * does Loreen sideways dance*

I was not happy with Lexie in that last epi * SPOILER* Tess is way more worth it and the triangle thing is getting v. tiresome, doubt I will watch if recomissioned.

As for Glasgow thingie, if someone says “I am pished on Buckie” it doesn’t mean they have had a wee toilet accident, it means they have imbibed on a local “fine” * whispers* fortified wine.

Or if you listen to the Swede “just channel Danish, it is quite similar” and she seems to understand Glaswegian pretty well and says the odd word were people get dead confused where she is from, she got dead upset the other day when accused of being Welsh * laughs *

For a crash course in Glaswegian watch NEDS and Small Faces filums, last one has Cat in it too. I believe there is also a popular tv show called The Scheme * laughs *

I know. It’s from True Love. BBC One, Sundays, about 10.30pm.

It started yesterday (17 June). It’s about five different couples, played out over five weeks. Very like Skins in that they’re interconnected but each week focuses on one couple.

I think Billie/Kaya are Week 3 (1 July): production site

Oh, and the dialogue’s mostly improvised. Trust me, it was better than I’m making it sound.

Dev, would you move the PG to the first page again?

I gave it a chance, but I didn’t like the teacher/student thing 6 years ago in that movie with the blonde and I still don’t like it now. If that was a hetero relationship, there would be pandelerium throughout the land.

And I noticed Billie’s teeth more than I ever have before, ybn. Maybe it was camera angles, I dunno. I thought both women looked nice though. Kaya has really grown up in the last couple of years.

see. SEE, the teeth!!!!!! no way would that get near my lady bits!!!!! Paloma Faith is the only other human with scarier teeth.

the teacher/student thingie didn’t bother me so much, probaby as I know she is 20ish in real life but the swede *tutted* up a storm. She can’t be doing with Piper anyhow, the teeth mainly but she has a thing about her face being a bit mannish too.

I thought they managed to make Kaya look a bit plain and it totally smacked of “hey let’s be all actressy and try improv” but was way better than the other 2 i’ve seen in the series

I think Billie has a great smile and a hot little body. It’s just weird when her mouth hangs open. There is so much dental activity going on! I get the Swede on her face though. It’s very angular. I also want her to lighten her eyebrows a shade or two.

The eyebrows are a thing of wonder, are they not? I suspect threading and dyeing.

I liked True Love and I liked the Piper one. I know a lot of people complained that they were too short (possibly) but I liked the feeling that they were like the old-fashioned TV plays we used to get on the BBC before everything turned all formulaic and shit. They were just glimpses into five people’s lives.

Considering the content of the others, I think the student/teacher thing bothered me less. After all, they were both of legal age and neither of them was married (or a prostitute or a predator). It’s unprofessional for the teacher (obvs) but I was assuming that she chose love over her career.

the wee-er swede is super, Ringo. She is just like here mamma with dimples and pretty chill when fed and entertained, she does eat a fair whack!. I am being told to stop picking her up as soon as I get home but she just looks at me so expectantly. She loves when I pick her up and go in the kitchen to sing and dance with the radio whilst making dinner.

She is pretty up to date on ALL Celtic info, and Man Ure * laughs * I am being told to also stop talking politics with her too as she is going to get confused that “stupid Mr Blobby face” is not David Cameron but is a proper child tv person.and I tend to “swear like a trouper” when discussing most of them.

She has also developed a habit of grabbing my toes when barefoot, not a good thing as I am very tickley there and I near pee myself before I can get her off, she has become VERY sneaky at it too and finds it highly amusing. Worser for the bigger swede as she grabs her hair, she has had to have it cut to shoulder length to try and avoid the grabby wee hands.

Oooooh hahahaha, I found my “questions for the PG” section:

  137. peanut

You need a shower and I can figure why that is. At least you’re not grumpy anymore.

As in what I’ve done so far and found creepy? Nothing, I wouldn’t do it otherwise.

I’m not a fan of hardcore SM stuff though. Everything involving extrem physical pain creeps me out. I’ve seen audition tapes for SM porn once … That was just … Something else.
Also weird noises or lame “dirty” talk. They’d actually make laugh really hard to the point that I loose focus.

Non consensual sex is also a big turn off. Meaning I could never do something that my partner is not interested in or not responding to.
I know some people don’t really care whether or not the other one likes what is happening and I don’t get it. The best part about sex is pleasing someone else, at least for me.
