All. About. You.

So, yesterday there was a comment about the Peanut Gallery being cliquey and closed off to new people, while there was a non-PG comment about us being intimidating. I can assure you all that it’s not true. Everyone here is absolutely lovely (except me, in fact, but I am working on it). And most of them were new at one time. So, if you’re new, if you lurk, if you just pop in occasionally, you’re always welcome.

In a bid to meet the neighbours, today we’re having a questionnaire and we would love it if every visitor ever told us a little about themselves. Copy, paste, fill in! Feel free to skip any questions you don’t like or that don’t apply to you. I know some of this has been asked and answered before on other threads, but this will help bring it together.

There will always be a normal PG thread, so you can post your comments / replies on other people’s posts here or in whichever is the most current PG. Enjoy!

The basic facts

1. Name?
2. Any other aliases we might know you by?
3. A/S/L?
4. Other places / countries you’ve lived in?
5. Who do you live with?
6. What sector do you work in / what are you studying?

A little bit more…

8. Favourite holiday destination?
9. Favourite place?
10. Fave reading (authors or titles)?
11. Last film you saw at the cinema?
12. Last single / album you bought in an actual shop (not online)?

The Desert Island Discs Question

[Desert Island Discs is a BBC Radio 4 show that has been running since 1942. Quite simply, guests pick eight songs / pieces of music, one book and one luxury item that they would take with them to a desert island. As a head start, this island already contains The Bible and the complete works of Shakespeare.

Eventually, they have to select just one of the eight tracks that they really could not love live without. For info, here are the choices of Victoria Wood, George Clooney and the awesome Patrick Stewart]

15. Name your eight songs / pieces of music, one book and one luxury item [CANNOT BE TECHNOLOGY – there’s no electricity on desert islands and ‘unlimited battery power’ is a SECOND item].

    1. Name?
    Dev

    2. Any other aliases we might know you by?
    Nope. This is it.

    3. A/S/L?
    Thirty-something / F / Glasgow, Scotland

    4. Other places / countries you’ve lived in?
Too many places in Scotland to count. A short time in Manchester. Oh, and if a three-month stay in each counts, then California and Arizona. [I had actually forgotten about Az till my mother reminded me today that we spent three months with my aunt when I was 3.]

    5. Who do you live with?
    The long-suffering MrsDev.

    6. What sector do you work in?
    Public sector.

    7. What did you want to be when you were a kid?
Either a lawyer or a nun.

    8. Favourite holiday destination?
    Las Vegas.

    9. Favourite place?
    Wherever MrsDev is.

    10. Fave reading (authors or titles)?
Mostly non-fiction or newspapers and magazines. But also anything serial killer-y (except Patricia Cornwell cos she’s become really shit).

    11. Last film you saw at the cinema?
Mamma Mia. My Dad picked it.

    12. Last single / album you bought in an actual shop (not online)?
I’ll say it loud and I’ll say it proud: Will Young. I bought it in the Sainsbury’s garage just round the corner from the Western General in Edinburgh.

    13. Have you ever laid a bet? If so, on which sport(s)?
All the time. Mostly on horses and football. I have laid some sports betting on baseball in the States as well.

    14. Last time you were in hospital?
About 4 years ago. I thought MrsDev might… She was really, really sick. I never want to feel that way again.

    15. So, name your eight songs / pieces of music, one book and one luxury item.

Book is easy: To Kill A Mockingbird

Luxury: Well, as I can’t pick a person, then it would be an old-fashioned, white, deep, enamel bath with constant running hot water.

    Music:
Band of Gold – Freda Payne
Ebben? Ne andrò lontana, the aria from Act One of La Wally, as featured in the film Diva, sung by Willhelmenia Fernandez
    Johann Pachelbel’s Canon
Agua de Beber – Antonio Carlos Jobim
The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face – Alison Moyet
A Lover Was Born – Lee Dorsey
    Real – William Shatner
    Caledonia – Frankie Miller

And the one that I would definitely keep out of those eight is Band of Gold.

Yeahbutno, I just tend to always know someone who knows someone who knows me, wherever I am I stumble upon someone who knows someone who knows me. Now I’m dizzy. That’s not why I’m infamous though. People just tend to never forget me if they’ve seen me somewhere. Guess I’m memorable…in all the wrong ways.

No, I’m not 3 metres tall or green, if that’s what you thought.

Ashesrising, you should join us in the PG. LAJ would love to have folk from the USA! She always complains that she has no one to talk to when we(Europeans) go to bed.

Packingforthecrash, you are definitely one of us! And you write fanfics, you can’t be intimidated by us! Plus, weren’t you the one who went around the USA for a month or so? I bet you have tons and tons of stories to tell us! Please, feel free to post in the PG. We are nice people:)

Ros, your English is better than mine so I’m sure you won’t have any problems with producing awesome comebacks in no time.

I’m wittier in Italian than I am in English too. The only thing we can do is try to improve:)

Wow. Was reading through and noticed, “Hey…there’s are LONGER than mine! IMPOSSIBLE.” So yeah. Here’s why.

Okay, not really WHY, but I did miss one question, so…yeah.

    15. So, name your eight songs / pieces of music, one book and one luxury item.

Uh…um…did I mention I’m bad at lists? Lemme try. Okay. Here we go. Let’s do this thing, Bri. C’mon. You can do it. C’mon.

    …Or not.

    No wait!

    …Yeah. No.

Okay, I’ll try. Um, Breaking Benjamin’s “You” and “Forget it” (too catchy lately), Jason Mraz’s “Remedy”, John Mayer’s “Say”, any song of Craig Chaquico’s, any song of Phil Collins, Warren Brother’s “Lucky”, and a song of Lifehouse’s. I guess.

One book would be…hmm…I’d say To Kill A Mockingbird, but I was also thinking Lord of the Flies. Kind of ironic. Not really. But close.

Luxery Item? Nail clippers. Very handy-dandy tool, peeps, trust me. Never leave home with out em. Can practically pass as a knife at the best of times too. And they’re fun to play with.

    A little bit more…
    7. What did you want to be when you were a kid? It’s changed a few times. I wanted to be a librarian, then own a bookstore, then have my own daycare. I want to get certified to be a therapist so I can make a little better living than I do now, but don’t know if that’s gonna work. Either way, I love what I do now and can’t imagine doing anything else.
    8. Favourite holiday destination? a beach somewhere
    9. Favourite place? the ocean or a pool.

I like Fern Michaels, Debbie Macomber, Janet Evanovich, Julie Anne Peters and John Grisham, Stuart Woods, James Patterson and Jonathan Kellerman for starters.
    11. Last film you saw at the cinema? I don’t even remember. Tells you how much I go. I think it was the Pirates at World End for my 30th bday, so it’s been well over a year. Wow.

As a visitor, when my ex was in in 2000 and the last time I was in one period was picking up some GS cookies last year. Wow, that was more involved than you probably wanted.

Eventually, they have to select just one of the eight tracks that they really could not love without. For info, here are the choices of Victoria Wood, George Clooney and the awesome Patrick Stewart]

    15. So, name your eight songs / pieces of music, one book and one luxury item.
Eight songs…wow. Well, Angels Would Fall by Melissa Etheridge is my current favorite
Any Man of Mine by Shania Twain
Friends in Low Places by Garth Brooks
More than a Memory by Garth Brooks
40 oz to Freedom by Sublime
    Red Red Wine by UB40
    Wasted by the Donnas
Hard Knock Life (or the Sign song Mr. Warbucks and Miss Hannigan sing together.)
the luxury item is a notebook. I figure I can make ink from berries or something and there’s gotta be something to use as a pen. I cannot just pick one book, but the first that comes to mind makes me cry everytime I’ve read it. Lost Boys by Orson Scott Card. I couldn’t read his sci-fi or fantasy or whatever the main genre is but I loved this. So so sad but so good. I’ve had it since I was maybe 12-13 and I’ve read it at least once a year since.

I’ve always been a shy kid and as such I’ve steered clear of the PG full of cool kids. It’s too much for me. Besides a comment reply from Clom, the only person I’ve had the slightest convo with on this site was Payne. I guess the best way to change that would be to brave the PG. Easier said than done. But I do like those “Tell me about…” topics posted on some chapters, even though some of them don’t apply to me. And I like this questionnaire too!

    1. Name?
    Ché (Shay)

    2. Any other aliases we might know you by?
    spashluva, trojanqtie

    3. A/S/L?
    24/F/St. Louis, Missouri USA

    4. Other places / countries you’ve lived in?
    Los Angeles, CA

    5. Who do you live with?
    Mom

    6. What sector do you work in / what are you studying?
Currently unemployed. Have my BS in Music Industry (mostly the business/legal side of the music world.)

    7. What did you want to be when you were a kid?
doctor, lawyer, singer, model. I was a very ambitious kid.

    8. Favourite holiday destination?
Haven’t had many vacations in my life, but any place with a beach would be ideal.

    9. Favourite place?
Italy (Rome and Venice). I went to Europe as a student ambassador when I was 16/17 and I thought for sure that Paris would be my favorite stop, but I fell in love with Italy. It’s beautiful.

    10. Fave reading (authors or titles)?
Currently just Spashley fanfiction. I haven’t liked reading since I was a kid and FF got me back into it. As a kid, my favorite reading was R.L. Stine’s Goosebumps series. And in school, my favorite book was The Giver, but I don’t remember who wrote it.

    11. Last film you saw at the cinema?
The Family That Preys. I want to see Eagle Eye next.

    12. Last single / album you bought in an actual shop (not online)?
    Fergie, The Dutchess

    13. Have you ever laid a bet? If so, on which sport(s)?
    Nope

For me: 14 yrs old, chin stitches.
For others: Over the summer, my fam and I had to say our last goodbyes to one of my cousins before he was taken off the machines.

    15. So, name your eight songs / pieces of music, one book and one luxury item.
Music: This is the question that caused my initial delay in answering this questionnaire. I’m a big music fan as you can probably tell from my field of study. So it’s not likely for me to be able to come up with just 8 songs w/o a long thought process, but I can give you 8 artists whose songs I’d most likely choose from:
    Whitney Houston
    Aaliyah
    Mariah Carey
    P!nk
    Missy Elliott
    Janet Jackson
    Michael Jackson
    Kanye West
And and honorable mention to Monica, lol.

Book: probably some kind of survival guide
Luxury: cd player with never-dying batteries to play my 8 songs on

Any other aliases we might know you by?
Bannerman, B-Man, Joshy, Lesbian Magnet, The Josh

    A/S/L?
    21/M/England

Other places / countries you’ve lived in?
Sadly, no other countries, though I lived/worked in London for a month, was brought up in Leicestershire and moved to the South Coast for uni and stayed there.

    Who do you live with?
4 housemates who all seem a lot younger than me – I feel like their older brother

What sector do you work in / what are you studying?
Just graduated from uni in TV, qualified as a camera man. I also drive boats. Technically, though, my job as a waiter pays the bills.

What did you want to be when you were a kid?
    A writer, actually

    Favourite holiday destination?
Somewhere beautiful with a fascinating history and vivid culture. Rome, basically.

    Favourite place(s)?
In Rome without a map, in my birthday suit in my gf’s bed, driving or being towed on my wakeboard by a ski boat on the open sea, on a snowy mountain with a board strapped to my feet, on a cliff face with a bag of chalk

I love TC Boyle, Matt Beaumont, Robert Harris. And I’ve wanted to read The Magus for time, and finally bought it today.

Last film you saw at the cinema?
I’m actually a movie freak and I’m addicted to buying DVDs, but don’t go to the cinema very often. Having said that, the last was How To Lose Friends And Alienate People. Megan Fox was the best thing about it.

Last single / album you bought in an actual shop (not online)?
I went halves with my gf to buy the new Pink album. The smile on my gf’s face was worth the £5 I lost… although I actually like the album. So I guess it’s a win-win situation.

Have you ever laid a bet? If so, on which sport(s)?
Yes, inadvertently, when I was young and my dad asked me who I would – theoretically – put my money on in the grand national (horse race). I lost. I’m not really a gambler.

Last time you were in hospital?
    When I was 17 I had a spine x-ray, so 4 years ago.

    15. Name your eight songs / pieces of music, one book and one luxury item

    Friday’s Dust – Doves
    Devil Inside – The Cinematics
    Southern Girl – Incubus
Wasted Early Sunday Morning – Sneaker Pimps
I Kissed a Girl – Katy Perry… (I think my gf has been raiding my itunes.)

book – The Magus, seeing as its long, and I just bought it

luxury item – a photo of all my family and friends… I would have said my guitar but apparently everyone on this board plays, and I don’t want this desert island we’ll all be inhabiting to be too noisy – I’ll borrow someone else’s!

No, I’m not back to complete the desert island q.

Just wanted to share a tid bit to the following…

I’m a proud Monash Alumni. I was there when people were shot… Wait, that’s not something to be proud of. I lived in Halls for 5 years… that’s not something to be proud of either… you make me homesick…

That bloke who did the shooting, was in most of my econometrics lectures and a couple of my tutorials in 1st semester of that year. He was real quiet and totally unassuming, didn’t say ‘boo’ to anyone, used to reek of the smell of cigarettes – I always made a mate of mine sit next to him (I’m nice like that) because the smell always made me want to gag and the only seats available were the ones next to this guy because we were always running late on the odd occasions I’d bother to turn up to my tutorials.
As for the day of the shooting itself, I was meant to have a tutorial either on that floor or the one above or below – who cares, now – but I declared it a day of R&R for myself and stayed home in bed. Good thing in hind sight considering there was a dude on the loose with a gun in the Menzies… It shocked the shit out of me and everybody else!!!

Moving on to more pleaseant thoughts… Monash rocked in general! To be more specific, Monash Clayton rocked… rocked on a grand scale and then some!!!
I’d like to take this very moment to publicly acknowledge and thank all those at Monash Clayton for keeping me amused and entertained and… and… and for providing me with nicely cut lawns to lounge about on as I pondered upon my brilliant existence – so “Thank you Monash Clayton”!!! :-)

Welcome Hmmm. Fellow Aussies are always adored.

Thanks. One can never have too much adoration in one’s life as I’ve come to conclude. :-)

What in the name of God and all that is holy is/are “econometrics”?

:-) No need to involve any higher beings…

“Econometrics” – the study of mathematics, specifically statistics, for the purpose of modelling and analysing various factors that impact the economy.
Ok – that was riveting!… And that concludes the lesson for today!!! ;-)

are you aware that we were at Monash at the same time. Did you ever attend the Queer room and or/ functions…

Yes – I was vaguely aware and nope – the handful of functions I managed to attended during Uni days were faculty related, both mine and others.

    Songs-
Thats not my name by the ting tings
    Amber by 311
Love Fool by newfound glory (its better than the original in my opinion)
I caught fire by the Used
Brown eyed girl by Van morrison
    Careless Whisper by Seether
I’m at war by sean kingston and lil wayne
    Suga by Flo Rida

Those are currently the songs always stuck in my head…

The book I would bring would be an encyclopedia… because I’ve never read an entire one.

My luxury item would be my girlfriend of course :) lol

A few days ago, I sent Clom and Dev an email explaining my newness to the site and telling them how amazed I was by those who regularly comment on the fics. Then, today I found this thread and knew I needed to make good on my promise to post. So here goes:

    1. Name?

    **sighs happily**

Also the comment above Treble’s is so hilarious that I just left it there…

Can I just start this by saying Buffy was one of the greatest shows ever, and Joss has near God status in my books? Joss is the only reason I have any appreciation for cinematography.

Ok, having said that, I figured I’d been lurking around long enough (6-8 months) and commented on just enough things that I supposed I should introduce myself.

    1) Name: Amanda.

    2) Alias: Nada, my name doesnt “nick”.

    3) A/S/L: 20, female, and Canada.

    4) Also lived: Thailand. Its an amazingly beautiful country (and warm), with a really interesting and bloody history.

    5) Live with: Right now I’m living with my best friend, but he has an internship in India for the summer, so I’ll soon be on my own.

    6) Study/Work: I’m studying to be a cop, but am paying for said studying by working in a movie theatre.

    7) Wanted to be growing up: Nothing concrete. I was that child that had a new occupation everyday. Though once I discovered Nancy Drew all I wanted to do was solve puzzles.

8)Favourite Holiday Destination: I don’t feel like I’ve travelled enough to have a favourite, and I don’t want to cut places I’ve never been.

    9)Favourite Place: Anywhere with friends.

    10) Favourite Readings: This is the hard part. I demolish books. Umm, David Eddings, Dean Koonts, Kay Hooper, Valerio Massimo Manfredi, C.E. Murphy and Mary Stewart. I’ll stop now lol.

    11) Last Movie: Ekk, Source Code but I see all the new movies every week. *shrugs* my job gives me free movies. I get to be that cool hip kid that always knows what’s going on.

    12) Last Album Bought In a Real Store: Lightning Crashes by Live, and I actually bought it for a friends sister.

    13) Bet: Other than drunken “I bet you cant…” things, no.

    14) Last Time In a Hospital: Umm, about 2 years ago. I broke my toe running the escarpment stairs to stay fit for… *shifty eyes*…soccer, er, football season.

    15) Eight Songs/One Book/One Luxury Item: This is actually the hardest one to answer.
    1) The Fear You Wont Fall- Joshua Radin
    2) The Remedy- Jason Mraz
    3) Connect The Dots- Spill Canvas
    4) Wonderland- Angie Aparo
    5) Stand By Me/Aint No Mountain High Enough- Marvin Gaye (I’d be forced to coin toss)
    6) I Cant Wait To Be King- Disney’s Lion King
    7) Everything Louder Than Everything Else- Meatloaf
    8) Angels- Within Temptation

    1) Enders Game- Orson Scott Card

    1) Can I go with sunscreen? A whole lot of sunscreen? Because I’m one of those people who is forced to burn a whole lot before becoming anywhere near tan.

Hi, I’m new in posting but not in lurking. I’m a big fan and I’d like to join in.

    1. Name?
    Waki

    2. Any other aliases we might know you by?
There are many which can be irrelevant right now.

    3. A/S/L?
    22, female

    4. Other places / countries you’ve lived in?
Let’s just say I’m used to the tropics. I tolerate rainy days and I bathe three times a day due to the heat.

    5. Who do you live with?
I live at the dorms during weekdays, so…my bubbly roommate. During weekends or when I’m hungry I go home. There I live with my parents and brother. Also there’s a funny household helper. And of course, our 5 dogs.

    6. What sector do you work in?
Not really working at the moment but in the future… Public Health.

    7. What did you want to be when you were a kid?
Adventurer (no joke intended), writer, rich businesswoman, doctor. Yes, I wanted a lot of things.

    8. Favourite holiday destination?
Beach or somewhere cold (for a change).

    9. Favourite place?
Anything with a bed and a lot of pillows. I like to sleep.

    10. Fave reading (authors or titles)?
I love fictions but I haven’t read one for quite some time due to my studies. All I know now is the anatomy of a human being and all the blahblahblah…

    11. Last film you saw at the cinema?
The last X-men movie or was it HP?

    12. Last single / album you bought in an actual shop (not online)?
    Omg. I cannot remember.

    13. Have you ever laid a bet? If so, on which sport(s)?
I place bets with my father all the time in boxing. But it was all in the jest… Though I realized I could have won all those time if only I took it seriously… Well, I did last time and I won. Not that I intend to repeat it again. It’s a strange feeling winning a bet against your father.

    14. Last time you were in hospital?
My brother was in the hospital…tough times. He got a grave disease but his vitals was stable though because prior to it we had a traumatic experience… Well anyway, to say the least he got better.

    15. So, name your eight songs / pieces of music, one book and one luxury item.

Book: Can I request for a library? No? Okay. Then I’d have to choose the Bible. I never got the chance to read it thoroughly so why not use the time in the island…Mmm…

Luxury: A comfy bed with at least 4 big pillows please. And oh, a sturdy shade while you’re at it :D

Music: I easily get tired of listening to music. Yes, I tend to have LSS but after a week or so I’ll delete the song from my list…and what if I get stuck to the island for mos or years? (Yeah, negativistic thinking…check) So I’ll stick to this lullaby my grandmother used to sing to me. It never fails to feel me safe and sleepy :D

Err…I was not clear with the working/studying part. I’m actually a nurse but I did not practice my profession after earning my degree and license. I traveled and got bum for a year before deciding to enter med school which I am trying to focus right now(*Keyword: focus).

I lack sleep as of the moment and I tend to skim thru things hence I failed to read that you get the Bible as a head start, my bad. If I can’t have a library, can I have a journal instead? I can get crazy when I cannot write my thoughts.

And yes, I’d trade the comforts of zzz in exchange for water. Lots of it. I may be a fish for all I know.
